In A Rude Reception, a crime thriller by John Layne, children called the sheriff's office when they found a body with a head wound from a gunshot at an abandoned gas station. This was the first murder in twenty years in Bison, Texas, and was undoubtedly a professional hit. The suspect made sure no evidence was left at the scene. The murder case presented Detective John Garrison with an unwelcome surprise and forced him back into the high-pressure world he had attempted to escape in Houston. It made John question his decision to take the police chief position in this small town. John and his colleagues need to broaden their investigation when a second murder raises the possibility that there is more going on than they first thought.

A Rude Reception by John Layne was compelling, and I was hooked from the beginning until the end. The story was jam-packed with action, and the suspense kept me in my seat. The narrative moved along at a great pace and never had a dull moment. The plot twists and turns had me guessing until the very end. The writing style gave life to the small town and its residents, making it easy to become a part of it. The characters were original and fitted well into the small town. John faced opposition as an outsider who was appointed chief instead of a familiar face in this small town, but he was not intimidated and stood his ground. The story is well-written and has all the elements of a page-turner.

A Rude Reception by John Layne introduces us to Detective John Garrison, a retired acting lieutenant from the robbery-homicide unit in Houston. He takes on the role of police chief in the quiet town of Bison, Texas, seeking a peaceful post-retirement job. However, when the town experiences its first homicide in 20 years, his hope for a serene retirement is dashed, forcing him back into the world of high-stakes investigations. As Garrison pursues leads into the murder case, he also has to navigate the complexities of small-town politics, placate cynical council members, and face personal danger. The police team’s investigation uncovers a conspiracy involving land fraud tied to the oil industry. Will Garrison and his team piece together the clues and will he get an opportunity to prove his abilities and bring justice to his newfound community?

The first book in the John Garrison Mysteries, A Rude Reception kept me turning pages and wanting to know more. John Layne takes his time to introduce us to the main characters in this story and set the stage for the rest of the narrative. Although the reader is introduced to the crime in the first chapter itself, the crime is reported only later. Each of the characters, from the resilient John Garrison to the determined Travis Cooper, are portrayed with authenticity, many of them having their own distinctive qualities and roles that add depth to the unfolding story. Layne added enough elements of suspense and mystery to keep me interested and eager to solve the case along with the Bison PD. I look forward to diving into more of the John Garrison Mysteries.

A Rude Reception: A John Garrison Mystery is a work of fiction penned by author John Layne in the crime, interpersonal drama, and suspense genres. In this thrilling novel, we’re invited into the world of former Houston homicide Detective John Garrison. He immediately begins to regret his decision to become police chief in Bison, Texas, when a murder disrupts his retirement plans. He navigates a treacherous investigation linking the crime to a land fraud conspiracy amidst the challenges of small-town politics and personal turmoil. It is a whirlwind journey of exciting twists and turns as readers follow Garrison's struggle to adapt to his new role.

I really enjoyed the character-driven aspect as a central plot hook, and it’s easy to get to know Garrison and all his detailed idiosyncrasies thanks to the strong narrative focus and dedicated speech and thought presentation. It’s easy to see how his attitudes and experiences have shaped him thus far, and the new challenges of this plot put him to the test for a great emotional arc that readers can get deeply invested in. The author masterfully weaves together the elements of mystery, suspense, and crime drama around Garrison, matching the mood of each setting to the emotional tone with some fantastic atmospheric descriptions. Each chapter left me eagerly anticipating the next, reminding me that, indeed, a man can dream, but reality often has other plans. Overall, I’d certainly recommend A Rude Reception by John Layne to fans of intelligently penned crime dramas everywhere.
