Have you ever wondered how our planet Earth feels about overpopulation, improper waste disposal, global warming, and other effects of industrialization? A Solar System Chat by Diana Kline provides the answers. Mother Earth is enraged and angry at the harm humans have inflicted on her over the centuries of civilization and industrialization. She is fed up with it all and turns to her fellow planets, the Big Sol, and even some moons for help. She is not above teaching humans a lesson to help them understand the extent of the harm they have caused her.
The goal of A Solar System Chat is to educate young readers about the dangers of improper waste disposal and recycling, as well as some of the harm that overpopulation and civilization have caused to the Earth’s surface and atmosphere. Artists Susan and Chris Cornetet's depictions of space and the individual characteristics given to each planet were superb, and the dialogue was so informative and educational that it felt like I was back in a science class. However, this book is much more interesting than those classes. Author Diana Kline skillfully used dialogue between the planets to give us details on the planets: how they got their names and how many moons they have, among others. Earth’s mission to find a solution provides us with both answers and more information about the solar system than we knew. A Solar System Chat is a great book for young readers because it is both entertaining and educational.
