A Top Gun Life: Memoirs of a Fighter Pilot by Roy Calvin Moore is more than just a memoir of a fighter pilot for the U.S. Air Force; it is an exposition of life in middle-class America in the twentieth century. Born in the Great Depression, one of ten children, Roy leaves home at just fifteen. He works his way up through the ranks in the U.S. Air Force in a career that would take him and his family all over the United States, to Spain, Turkey, Japan, the Philippines, and other exotic locations. At the end of his military career, Roy takes his family to Missouri, where they settle on a small farm, and he alternates between being a country rancher and an entrepreneurial contractor. Through sixty-odd years, his beloved wife Joan stands by Roy’s side, traveling all over the world and raising their four children.
A Top Gun Life is a special memoir because it focuses as much on Roy Calvin Moore’s life before and after his military service as it does on the years spent in the Air Force. From such humble beginnings, it was inspiring to read what he managed to achieve, especially given his limited education. It is a reminder that if you commit yourself to a course of action and work tirelessly to achieve it, anything is possible. I particularly appreciated how the author expressed his personal views on society and politics in general. A conservative in outlook, I was reminded that political viewpoints and differing opinions can be the basis for logical and rational discussion, rather than the source of division, polarization, and even hatred that they have become in recent years. I enjoyed the anecdotes of Roy’s early life, his military career, and his after-military life, which all combined to make this an amusing and interesting read. Discovering that this memoir was published posthumously by his family, I must commend them for giving us access to the personal life of a warrior, a son, a husband, a father, and just an all-around decent American guy. This is a wonderfully refreshing and genuine read that I highly recommend.
