In A Trail to Love by Joanne Kiersarsky, the story begins in the early 19th century with a young soldier named Rex who falls for Felicity, the daughter of a powerful and rather ruthless senator. After her father tries to force her into a marriage of political convenience, the couple flees west to start a new life. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when Rex leaves to fight in the Battle of New Orleans, leaving Felicity to face an uncertain future on her own. Years later, the plot focuses on Ellie Bennett and her large, close-knit family in Virginia. One day, her grandfather gathers the family to discuss a letter he’s received from his son, Lucas, living in Wyoming. The letter describes how the family could start a new life there by purchasing land. So, they decide to join a wagon train heading west to reunite with her uncle. Along the way, they meet a scout named Jack, traveling toward Oregon in search of his birth father. At first, he and Ellie clash. Over time, they’re forced to rely on each other more than either of them expects, and their opinions of each other begin to change ever so slowly. Will Jack and Ellie finally learn to get along? Will he make it to Oregon? And what happened to Felicity?
I really enjoyed reading A Trail to Love by Joanne Kiersarsky. The writing was engaging and easy to follow. I liked how the story followed different characters at different points in time. There were also some plot twists that I definitely didn’t see coming. I especially appreciated the slow pace of Ellie and Jack’s relationship. I think the way their opinions of each other changed over time felt natural and believable. Ellie stood out to me because she is strong and capable, with a touch of stubbornness. I admired her toughness and her ability to use a gun, especially given the time period and the fact that she’s a woman. Readers looking for a story about pioneer life or a historical romance will definitely want to read this tale. This book kept me interested from beginning to end, and I highly recommend it.
