A View from the Middle: How an Unknown Actor Managed to Stay That Way is the story of the author’s life in the Hollywood movie and TV industry. Author Larkin Campbell shares his professional life story from his early days when he decided to try acting to the time he retired from the business. Although Campbell worked with well-known actors such as Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, and others, and also with director Steven Spielberg, his roles consisted of playing “guy in a bar” and similar characters. The book contains recountings of conversations that Campbell had with acting and directing icons. It is illustrated with numerous drawings that provide a lighthearted look at Campbell’s acting journey, along with photographs of the author with celebrities.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading A View From the Middle: How an Unknown Actor Managed to Stay That Way. Author Larkin Campbell is a fine writer and understands the fascination that many have with the Hollywood TV and movie industries. The book is insightful, enlightening, and totally entertaining. Best of all, it’s the story of a man who, although he didn’t reach the high goal he aspired to, accepted what fate gave him with grace, humility, and humor. Everyone should read Campbell’s story, not only to learn about what life in the movie and TV business is like for the vast majority of actors but to learn to accept what life gives us with the most positive attitude possible, no matter our relative success. This is truly an inspiring book and I highly recommend it to anyone.
