Who you are and what you will become should never be separate. This simple yet profound truth is written in a very easy to understand manner in A Waitress’s Guide to Spirituality (Finding Meaning in the Menial) by Michelle Akda. Though a waitress isn’t typically the person through whom we think we will find gems of spiritual truth, Michelle brings to light some incredible lessons that she has learned as a waitress, lessons which can have a huge impact on all of our lives. Setting your attitude is one of the most important factors involved in the spiritual teachings of Michelle. Attitudes that reflect who you are, your gratitude for the opportunities that have come your way, and attitudes of keeping everything in perspective are only a few of the many lessons to be gleaned from Michelle’s book. Regardless of what job you have, whether it is the one you have dreamed of or one that is getting you to that dream, the moment to live your dream and seek the miracles of God is now. You and no one else can create that attitude of seeking and living.
Having spent plenty of time as a waiter, I have profound respect for and can easily relate to the lessons that Michelle Akda is sharing in A Waitress’s Guide to Spirituality. Your ability to create a positive outlook while engaging in a difficult task, such as serving impossible-to-please customers, is an extension of grace that goes beyond everyday interactions and tests the depth of your spirit. How you deal with these trials will ultimately determine your attitude. That attitude can go in one of two directions, depending on whether you decide to react to or create from it. The profound wisdom shared in A Waitress’s Guide to Spirituality is as meaningful and practical as anything you will hear from a great teacher in a pulpit.
