Switch by Lisa Towles centers on Marissa Ellwyn (Mari), an ex-CIA agent turned PI, who struggles to navigate her life challenges in light of a string of unforeseen events. The novel opens with Mari recovering at her family's estate after sustaining a critical injury during a previous case. She is frequently haunted by unresolved issues related to her family's dysfunctional dynamics. What starts as an investigation headed by Mari and her PI partner, Derek, into a series of shocking bank heists culminates in the search for a missing cadaver and a Medical Examiner who has disappeared without a trace. Mari's investigation slowly points to her father, a CIA agent, and a crime boss from her father's past. Can Mari confront the secrets buried beneath the surface of her life and solve this harrowing case once and for all?
Lisa Towles' Switch is a riveting suspense thriller that blends danger, unresolved trauma, family drama, and professional intrigue. The shifting perspectives and interlaced plot paint a clear picture of how buried secrets can create conflict within family dynamics. The most captivating aspect is how well the author explores intense emotional grievances in a tightly woven plot filled with deception and crime. This engaging narrative will have readers questioning the reliability of the characters' memories and their underlying motives. I admire the way Towles also uses Mari's journey to depict the grey areas and institutional corruption that exist between private investigation and law enforcement agencies.
