In A Wave of Breath by Tess Collins, Brooklyn's and Martin's lives are abruptly disrupted when the water turns red while they shower together. This marks the beginning of the catastrophic Water Event, a disaster that affects only the United States. Before disappearing, Martin promises Brooklyn that he will return for her. When he did not return, she went searching for him. Brooklyn discovers information about Martin that she was unaware of, and the dangerous secrets he hid. Brooklyn becomes the guardian of Boxy, a highly advanced quantum device Martin entrusted to her. A company is determined to find Boxy at any cost, and chaos is spreading across the country. Brooklyn must face danger, thieves, bandits, allies, and enemies throughout her journey.
I enjoyed reading A Wave of Breath by Tess Collins. It grabbed my attention from the first page, and I could not turn the pages fast enough. Every character had a background that made it easy to get to know them better. Brooklyn is a strong and resourceful character. She grows throughout the book from a woman searching for Martin into a survivor. The writing is vivid, and the dangers of the devastated country were real. With the events that were described in detail, it was easy to visualize them. The writing was outstanding, and the sections flowed into each other effortlessly. The book was expertly written and had me hooked from the start until the end, with all the components to be a great success. The ending was unexpected, and I did not see it coming.
