The Hidden Stairway is the fourth book in the Abby & Holly Series by Janice Spina. After celebrating their same birthdays, cousins and best friends Abby and Holly are determined to solve the mystery of the urn and jewelry they found in the attic of their old Victorian house. They discover that the ashes belonged to Annabelle Bradley, a young woman in the 1880s. As they traverse back in time through a mysterious stairway, Abby and Holly meet the real Annabelle, who lived in a boarded room of the house owned by Mrs. Radcliffe. Meanwhile, in 2020, their mothers are worried for their daughters' safety, only to be calmed by the friendly resident ghosts of Felicity and Minerva. Will they solve the mystery and get back home safely?
An invigorating adventure odyssey, The Hidden Stairway is an absolute blast to read. Author Janice Spina maneuvers a fast-moving plot and colorful characters to weave a delightful tale full of wonder. Abby and Holly are likable protagonists with distinct personalities that pop out of the pages. Even the secondary characters such as Felicity, Minerva, and Annabelle are vibrant and keep you hooked until the end. Spina's main protagonists from other books, the twins Davey and Derek, also make a guest appearance that is bound to delight readers who have read the previous installments. I had a wonderful time reading The Hidden Stairway. I think readers between preteens to young adults will find plenty to enjoy in this book.
