Acea and the Animal Kingdom by Kyle Shoop is the first book in the Acea Bishop series. Acea wakes up in a strange place that resembles a zoo and, as he explores, he discovers amazing rooms that introduce him to a variety of animals. When he finds a mysterious book with his name inside, he uncovers a family secret that introduces him to the father he never knew. As he digs deeper into the mysterious animal kingdom, he learns of an ancient curse that turned everyone into animals and will push him to face his deepest fears as he confronts a dangerous sorcerer to save his family and the entire kingdom.
Kyle L. Shoop delivers a delightful adventure that presents a unique concept and brings to life a cursed kingdom. The story dives straight into the adventure as the opening moments set up the mystery when Acea wakes up in a place that is certainly not his bedroom. The mystery is slowly explored as Acea learns about the kingdom and the curse that plagues it, but the greatest aspect of the mystery involves his own family. Each step he takes in his journey helps him move towards becoming a hero. He meets several characters that act as mentors or guides that help along the way, with each providing a specific piece of information that contributes to the larger battle against the sorcerer.
The story has various animal details woven throughout such as teaching children about echolocation, tarantulas, and the way male penguins care for the young which is seen through Papa Penguin as he sits upon his egg. Acea has never known his dad which is at the center of his journey and the secrets he uncovers, but the further he digs into how to break the curse, the more his family secrets seem to come to light. Acea and the Animal Kingdom is an exciting adventure that brings to life a world of animals that children will love.
