Change can be hard for some but for others, it can be exhilarating. In Adrian's Odyssey by Diane Belinfanti, inspired by the life of the author, the reader will see through the eyes of nine-year-old Adrian as he’s faced with his family’s decision to move from Kingston, Jamaica to Miami, Florida for a better life. Living in Jamaica is all that he’s known since birth. The young reader will be able to relate to Adrian's fear, the challenges he experiences, and the feeling of being out of his comfort zone. He believes that in Miami he wouldn’t fit in or would have to deal with various biases or other forms of criticism. One thing that stands out is that he would miss being with his friends and he feels he wouldn’t be able to make new ones in Miami.

Reading Adrian's Odyssey by Diane Belinfanti will help the young reader understand that it is important to work through fears by talking to someone about them, confronting those obstacles, and being transparent and honest about feelings and emotions. Like Adrian, the reader will see that there may be other people with the same sentiments who can offer some tools to help them function better through these traumatic times. I enjoyed this book because it shows that as change occurs, you adapt, connect, and see things from another perspective. This new perspective creates and develops growth for walking on your new journey. Once you become comfortable with this new journey, you begin to realize that this is the best choice for your life, causing you to embrace a new way of being.
