In Against the Wild Green Range by Paul F. Murray, 22-year-old Alexia Rourke inherited the family ranch after her father's passing and she was determined to keep it running. However, a lot was not going well and the strain of keeping it all together was starting to take a toll on her. Between the troubles caused by a treacherous relative bent on seeing her fail, endless deadly confrontations with the Indians onto whose hunting land her cattle kept wandering, a married man who wouldn't take no for an answer, and hard financial times, she was facing battles from every corner. With no one to turn to for help, the battles were exhausting, especially when a mysterious new enemy started attacking her ranch. The situation was not helped by the fact that her personal life was also a mess, for she was madly in love with a man who barely acknowledged her existence. However, with her loyal ranch hands by her side, Alexia was determined to defend and preserve her ranch and get her heart's desire against all odds.
Straight from the first page, the story dives into the thick of it, drawing the reader in right away and this pace keeps the thrill strong through the entire book. The excellent descriptions of the settings and the different characters brought the story to life perfectly, and even without mentioning years one could easily tell the place and time the story was set. I especially loved that the main character of the story felt genuinely human; she is portrayed as beautiful, headstrong and confident, but also with the weaknesses, flaws and wickedness expected of someone her age. Paul F. Murray delivered one hell of a captivating story in Against the Wild Green Range and fans of western fiction with a touch of romance will have an absolute thrill reading it.
