Author Biography

Essence Bonitaz is the author of the Ajha's Web family saga. Set in her home state of Minnesota, the debut novel, Ajha's Web: Tortured Souls initiates the Martinez family's involvement with the blogger whose advice influences critical decisions leading to events that will alter their family bond forever. Essence describes herself as a bit reclusive and extremely shy but put a pen in her hand, and her most fascinating qualities spill onto the paper. Her love of nonfiction--particularly topics relating to self-improvement, psychology, sociology, and anthropology--inspire her writing. Her signature style sets relatable characters from various cultures free to interact in dynamic urban environments under precarious circumstances while her readers witness the outcome. In her own words, Essence lightheartedly admits, "Convention is boring. The idea of succeeding despite not following a set standard thrills me. Paving my own way is far more gratifying than following a path worn by the masses. I revel in the hypothetical. A lifetime of observing human behavior and circumstances with my mouth shut and my mind open has left me constantly imagining, 'What if...' When the scenarios in my mind become entertaining stories, I write them down and share them. Paradoxically, my real life is very conventional, rule-oriented, and quiet. I have a regular 9:00-to-5:00 not worthy of mention and an unspeakable imagination.

“What’s on your mind?” Blogger Esencia welcomes all her blog readers to share their dilemma with her. Esencia’s advice makes the most impact on the Martinez family and the people they are connected with. Written by Essence Bonitaz, Ajha’s Web: Tortured Souls is the first installment that introduces readers to the Martinez family saga.

This dramatic novel hits the ground running. It grabs my attention from the get go with Tarah’s entry in her diary. From there, author Essence Bonitaz deftly weaves the story with sub-plots that aptly justify the title of this novel. It lies perfectly between comedic and serious. Hector Martinez is certain that he has found love again after an erotic night with Tarah, who is the best friend of his sister, Ajha. When Alejandra, his ex-fiancee and mother of his teenage daughter, Bo, comes into his life again, Hector is stuck in a quandary. On the other hand, Tarah actually yearns for someone else. Secrets abound, and so do angst and heartbreaking moments. My most favorite part of all is Ajha’s role in her family drama. She has an exciting secret which I would not spoil for other readers.

Bonitaz’s writing style is free from tangential details and flaws, making this an easy but stimulating read. Bonitaz also included spicy sexual scenes that give this book an erotic quality. All in all, this is an excellent debut for a series. Ajha’s Web: Tortured Souls will take you for a great emotional ride with the Martinez family and leave you wanting more.

Ajha's Web: Tortured Souls by Essence Bonitaz is a family saga where the stories of the characters in the family reveal a common streak of unhappiness. Hector Martinez, a single father, is keen to find love again. He has a fling with his younger sister's friend and while he is having a good time, his ex-fiancée walks back into his world again and disrupts his present state of mind. The book speaks about an estranged mother who is the victim of an addiction, a brother's volatile affair, and Ajha in the midst of it all. This is the introductory volume of the book.

The book introduces you to the Martinez family. It is a dark story about family, relationships, deception, and tragedy. The story has many sub-plots that have been woven well into the main plot without sounding forced. The story is compelling and the author has written a plot that is realistic and honest. The story has a lot of secrets and action that add to the intrigue. It keeps the reader glued. It also has some erotic moments which enhance the spice of the story.

The book has set the scene for the series to follow and after reading this book, it is evident that the series is going to be highly enjoyable and explosive. The reader will get entangled in the series of happenings. The Martinez family will leave you wanting more.

The double entendre in the title of Ajha’s Web: Tortured Souls by Essence Bonitaz is woven into a tightly tangled web. Included here is the use of the World Wide Web in the blog of Esencia, which helps to reveal the thoughts and feelings that are going on inside of the head of two of the main characters. Ajha sits in a unique seat as the sister to Hector and the best friend of Tarah while she watches the intense relationship between the two of them begin like the shot out of a cannon. Happy in one sense, because her brother is finally letting go of the hurt of his past relationship with his ex-fiancée, a professional model with a difficult past and mother to his daughter Bonita. In the other sense, however, she is torn as to how it will affect the relationship between her and her best friend and what sort of problems might arise. As each character is set on stage in first person to tell their part of the drama as the story progresses, it becomes very clear that each member involved feels the sharp torture of each of the others deep in their soul. How will the tangled web unravel itself? What role can Esencia play, sitting in a place where she can view it all, but very limited in what she can actually do? Will they find relief for their tortured souls?

Ajha’s Web: Tortured Souls by Essence Bonitaz is unique in the way that the thoughts and emotions of the characters are revealed. It is also a very deep and honest look at the way that we weave a tangled web through deceit and misrepresentation. It takes a deep look into family and relationships in a way that is honest and realistic. Straightforward, tragic and deep, Ajha’s Web: Tortured Souls kicks this series off in a huge way and sets the standard high for the rest of the series. It’s not for the weak of heart nor the closed-minded, but for those who are ready to open their minds. It is an excellent and honest novel.
