Celebrate the chaos of the holidays with Alien Bracelet Christmas by Laurel Lorenzini and illustrated by Gabriel San Martin. Part of the Alien Bracelet series, this story begins with a band of colorful aliens eager to celebrate the Earth holiday, Christmas. A brother and sister agree to allow the aliens to join in the family fun, so long as they promise to follow the rules the sister sets out. This includes not eating the Christmas feast, staying away from cars, and not blowing anything up, among others. When the family arrives, the aliens begin to cause trouble in their zeal to enjoy the festivities, though each one makes sure to follow the given rules. In the end, the aliens and humans join together to appreciate friends and family.
For children who love their Christmas with a hint of mischief, Alien Bracelet Christmas by Laurel Lorenzini is the perfect book. As a fan of comics, I enjoyed the speech bubble format used for dialogue and Gabriel San Martin’s illustrations are colorful, clear, and lots of fun. Lorenzini's aliens cause unexpected disasters, but they are cute and playful, not scary. I also appreciated the diversity among the humans pictured in the book with the visiting aunt, uncle, and cousins portrayed as a biracial family. For those wondering, the book portrays Christmas through a more general lens, centering on family and togetherness, and not disrespecting faith in any way. This book is an easy read for beginner readers to try on their own but I also see it as a great storytime book for the family.
