Thirteen-year-old Sophie’s parents are getting divorced. Her mother, brother Aiden, and sister Logan have moved across town into a small two-bedroom apartment in a dodgy neighborhood because their father lost all their money in a questionable investment scheme. Without his financial support, their day-to-day existence is deteriorating. In All We’ve Lost by Nancy DeRosa, Sophie, the main character, struggles to keep her world together, with the fear that anyone she loves will leave her. She longs for her old life, in her old neighborhood, and she is certain no one will want to be friends with her. She worries about the effect of their new circumstances on her older brother and younger sister. If their situation doesn’t improve soon, Sophie wonders what kind of future there is for any of them.
This is a story of hope and resilience. All We’ve Lost by Nancy DeRosa captures the life of one small family struggling to overcome challenges not of their own making. The well-structured plot moves forward effortlessly by documenting their daily difficulties and the stresses a single mother’s situation places on the relationship with her children. The author’s characterization of Sophie is heartwarming and so realistic. I found myself experiencing feelings of sadness and anger when she suffered, and feelings of happiness and joy when her life turned around. The scene where Sophie sits on the apartment building's ramp, where the bad boys she feared used to sit, reflecting on the positive changes coming into her life, is very touching and reinforces that this is, indeed, a story of hope and resilience.
