Cindy Miller's Alli the Alligator is about a young alligator named Alli who enjoys life with her family by the Rumbly River, spending days swimming and playing with cousins. Her world changes when she sees human children nearby, intrigued by their games and differences. Eager to join them at school, Alli receives encouragement from her parents and enrolls in Swamp Elementary as the first alligator student. She was happy and excited about her first day at school. But that feeling slowly fades because she looks different. Even then, Alli holds on to kindness and quiet bravery. During a field trip, two children accidentally fall into the river. Alli immediately dives in to save them. At this pivotal moment, everything transforms, fostering acceptance and camaraderie. It all culminates in a joyful celebration as kids and alligators finally unite.

Alli the Alligator by Cindy Miller is a delightful story that delves into the courage required to be true to oneself while adapting to a new environment and making new friends. The world-building is quite charming, especially with fun details like the Gator Times newspaper and Chomp Chomp Village, which make the alligator community relatable. The vibrant and expressive illustrations by Joan Coleman bring the Rumbly River to life with such warmth. Coleman expertly portrays Alli's wide-eyed astonishment and the comedic contrast of a large alligator donning a tiny pink tutu. These visual elements establish an inviting atmosphere that challenges typical swamp stereotypes and beautifully enhances the story’s cheerful and laid-back tone. The characters are relatable, particularly as Alli's family encourages her to pursue her own dreams. This book examines early anxieties about the unknown while emphasizing kindness as a means of fostering understanding. Its straightforward rhythmic language makes it an excellent choice for parents to read aloud. This book is a wonderful recommendation for toddlers and early readers who love stories about animals or anyone looking for a "first day of school" book that celebrates diversity. An adorable lesson on kindness.
