Smiley had a lot to learn. He didn’t know why he was in a dog shelter. Had he done something wrong? In Olena Kagui’s What Smiley the Rescue Dog Didn’t Know, Smiley is quickly adopted into a loving family, so he doesn’t have to feel frightened living with so many other dogs and people. He still had a lot to learn – like what he could eat and shouldn’t eat, what he could chew on, and why he needed something around his neck when he went out with his human family. Life was grand, and when a new furbaby joined the family, Smiley was the caring older sibling willing to accept and play with the new dog in the family. When another new dog joined them, Smiley was a little confused, because this little dog was quite different; he was actually a cat.
Olena Kagui’s picture book, What Smiley the Rescue Dog Didn’t Know, is a clever tribute to a real dog and how he adjusted to living with his human family. The story is told in simple language, allowing young readers to easily follow along and improve their reading skills. The plot follows Smiley’s many adventures as he adjusts to living with his adopted family. The illustrations by the author are simple but charming, making Smiley appear as lovable as he was in real life. The story encourages young readers to engage in discussions on dog care, adoption, caring for others, and feelings. Smiley certainly has a lot of feelings he likes to share. An interactive story that will have young readers talking about dogs and the importance of family.
