Alpha Beta Gamma by Malabika Ray follows Srija, known as Sri, a physics student who becomes embroiled in the murder investigation of two professors, Reza and Helena, both killed under extraordinary circumstances. Sri is approached by Neil Basu, a police officer with a possible connection to MI6, who enlists her help. As the case progresses, Sri grows more suspicious of those around her, including her flatmate, Matt, and she questions the true nature of Neil’s involvement. While juggling her personal and academic life, Sri uncovers clues that suggest the murders may be linked to a covert government operation. She doubles down, goes a bit rogue, and digs deeper into the investigation, facing growing danger, being unsure of who to trust, and managing the moral and emotional implications of her discoveries.
Malabika Ray’s Alpha Beta Gamma is a really great mix blend of mystery and suspense, led by what is almost a unicorn in contemporary trade literature: an Asian female protagonist. As a mother of the same ilk, I cannot state strongly enough how much this means to me. Sri is smart, capable, and full of agency, somehow able to keep multiple plates spinning: academic pressure, family stress, friendships, and, of course, the potential of a chilling conspiracy. The plot feels fresh and exciting, and Ray keeps readers guessing throughout. I did find that the occasional minutiae of daily tasks and turn-by-turn movements hampered the pacing somewhat, but the storyline is solid enough to overcome it. Overall, this is a perfect read for those who enjoy good, suspense-filled, female-led mysteries. Recommended.
