Shortly after the death of his paternal grandparents, Alex Priar’s world is thrown totally upside down when his parents disappear and strangers burst into his home in time to save his life in An Empire of Dreams by Lewis J. Jones. With tremendous destruction happening all around him, Alex is whisked away by the Evergreens and then goes into hiding with his uncle, Abraham. Seven years pass with Alex in seclusion because of Abe’s seemingly paranoid fears until another strange event occurs. An empty ship crashes into the shore of the seaside town in which Alex lives. The Evergreens return as well and together they begin to investigate a series of special books, looking for any hint regarding the reason for the Evergreens’ exile and Alex’s parents’ disappearance. With plenty of odd gadgets and travelling through time in a collapsible wardrobe, Lewis J. Jones' story paints a future that is quite unique. The burning question is, though, who is behind framing the Evergreens for the first murder in over 100 years and what does it have to do with Alex? Who or what are the real forces behind this mystery and what is their ultimate goal?
Time is fluid but dedication is not in this gripping tale of manipulation and the pursuit of justice. As the first volume in the Of Hearts and Minds series by Lewis J. Jones, An Empire of Dreams takes you on a marvelous journey into the hearts, minds and lives of the characters as they work together to try to resolve the mystery that begins several hundred years in the future, but falls on the shoulders of a 12-year-old boy in 1993. Excellent descriptions, tremendous creativity and deep insights into human nature bind you to this fantastic story as you travel along with the characters to find answers to questions that have yet to be asked. A must-read for every fan of YA sci-fi, magic and mystery.
