An Itch for Justice by Christa Nardi is the first book in the Izzie Di Sante Mysteries. Izzie has grown up knowing what her life path would be and now reluctantly works at her family’s restaurant. Her real passion is for investigative reporting and she’s finally found an opportunity to pursue her true goals. She leaves her sister to handle matters in the kitchen while she investigates the Scanlon murder but when the clues pile up and don’t make sense, she begins to question her skills. She struggles to balance her work responsibilities with solving the case as it soon becomes apparent that poking into the mystery could put her family’s livelihood at stake and could bring the killer closer.
The story begins with Izzie already involved in the mystery with the facts woven in to catch you up. This is a solid beginning to a series with Izzie’s journey keeping your attention and serving as a great introduction to who she is. The mystery is grounded thanks to a significant amount of quiet character moments. These help you sympathize with the various characters involved while showing that Izzie is driven by compassion more than by curiosity. Christa Nardi crafts engaging characters that feel well-rounded and have a lovely back-and-forth between them in genuine exchanges. This is particularly seen in the dynamic between Henry and Izzie who share a chemistry that adds fun to her investigation. The writing has a good pace and the author knows just how long to spend between characters and quickly draws you into the mystery from the beginning. An Itch for Justice is a charming mystery with delightful investigative moments and a relatable arc of pursuing your passion and maintaining family responsibilities.
