An Unexpected Role is a YA story by Leslea Wahl about a sixteen-year-old named Josie. After her mother’s book comes out, Josie is teased incessantly by the entire high school about the antics in the book because they believe the stories are about her. Who could blame them because her mother has been writing about her awkwardness for years. After her boyfriend dumps her, her phone is bombarded with pranks, and her best friend leaves her to spend the entire summer with her father, Josie finds herself needing to get away. Believing that her mother has ruined her entire life, Josie heads off to visit her aunt who lives a carefree life on an island off the coast of South Carolina. As she makes new friends and investigates a sudden rash of robberies, Josie comes to some life defining realizations.

Wow! I don’t know where to start! Leslea Wahl has managed to intricately weave a beautiful web of relationships, trust, love and… musicals. What could be a better combination than that? An Unexpected Role contains all the aspects of a truly amazing story. Josie learns a hard lesson from young and old alike. She finds out that things aren’t always what they seem, and that even though her problems seemed like the end of the world to her, in the grand scheme of things they are minute at best. As Josie sets out to unravel the age-old mystery of “who am I?” she learns some hard lessons. Want to hear more? Read the book! You won’t be disappointed. A true delight!

Leslea Wahl has done it again! Another heart-pounding, can't-put-it-down teen suspense novel with humor galore and a delightful romantic twist. What more could you want?

While her first book, "The Perfect Blindside" (which, by the way, will blindside YOU when you realize you've stayed up all night reading it), was set in snowy Colorado, "An Unexpected Role" takes us to a picturesque sea town on an island in South Carolina. There 16-year-old Josie escapes for the summer, trying to get away from the cruel teasing of her classmates in Minnesota. But, to her absolute horror, one of the very classmates she is trying to avoid shows up on the same island for HIS summer vacation too! Bad luck, or what? While Josie ducks and dives in a desperate attempt to avoid the guy, she finds herself falling head over heels for an incredibly handsome refugee who works as a summer tourist guide. She instantly loses her heart.

But before long, much more than simply Josie's heart is at stake. Her very life may be in danger, as well as someone else's close to her. Local robberies plague the village, and when Josie decides to investigate, she naively steps straight into the path of danger.

I love the author's sense of humor. Every page drew at least one laugh, usually many more! And the way she gets into the head of a teenager is truly delightful. Both of her books are such fun reads with characters you will not soon forget. I really, really hope Wahl writes more books!
