A few years after Karl and Angela’s wedding, tragedy strikes, leaving Angela devastated and grieving. She moves to Alaska, hoping to find healing. Lovers of contemporary romances blended with suspense, and a touch of adventure and drama will find Arctic Awakening by Karen Black an enthralling read. Black reveals the cast’s intricate emotions and personalities through the character-driven conversations. The introspective commentary and the third-person limited perspective, which shifted between Angela and Ryan, gave me insight into their thoughts and conflicts. These also lent depth to the drama. Angela demonstrates how tough dealing with grief can be and the steps one can take toward healing. Her decision to move from Idaho to Grizzle, Alaska, highlights the power a change of scenery has for those recovering from emotional and mental turmoil. Through Ryan, we learn about the importance of communication in any relationship. The vivid imagery dropped me into the characters’ fractured worlds, as they navigated their problems against the backdrop of Idaho’s urban life and Alaska’s snowy, mountainous environment.
