As If Yesterday by C.J. Vermote is a puzzling thriller. Mi has finally returned to Seattle after moving from state to state for the past thirteen years. Even though she has been back for six months, she hasn't let her three sisters know that she is there. Mi loves them, but their troubled childhood has somehow affected her differently than her sisters. Mi feels unworthy of their love and doesn't want them to see how dirty she feels from the repercussions of her past, of which she only remembers small unpleasant bits and pieces. When she feels threatened, Mi gets headaches and can't account for all of her time. This occurs mostly when she is going through a break-up with a boyfriend. She has trouble with her relationships, and after every break-up with a boyfriend, she moves to another state. Steve was her new boyfriend here in Seattle, but she just broke up with him. The break-up is followed by another whopping headache and another block of time unaccounted for. Determined that she is through running, Mi makes the choice to stay. A few days later, she reads in the newspaper that Steve has been found dead in his apartment. Had their breakup caused him to commit suicide? Now a detective is stalking her and questioning her about the mysterious disappearance of one of her other boyfriends. She knows she is not responsible for their deaths, but can she prove it?
As If Yesterday by C.J. Vermote is a thrilling suspense story of a young lawyer who is trying to break free from the atrocities of her past. This is a mind stretching story and I was caught in the web of Mi's past. As I grieved for the child, I wondered how she was going to escape the fallout from her past that impacts the present. This story gives the reader a view of the repercussions of child abuse and the different ways people respond to it. It is about more than Mi and her inability to face her past. It is about her psyche and how she protects herself. This is a great suspense story that is for a more mature reader. I recommend it for ages sixteen and up.
