In Awakening by Lorel Clayton, The Convergence is on the horizon, an event that will open the otherwise guarded doors separating the three worlds of witches, vampires, and werewolves from those of the demons and fairy folk, thus creating a situation dangerous to all. Roxy, a young witch with powers not shared by those of her kind and coveted by demons and fairies alike, is the only hope for making a deal that will keep the doors closed. This is a major effort, further complicated by insecurity about her skills as well as personal struggles with trust issues toward a vampire she loves and a werewolf who needs her help to save an unstable marriage.

Lorel Clayton's fascinating tale of suspense and adventure, and love lost and won is set in a world of well-known monsters, while adding to these monsters' standard skills and powers, as well as weaknesses and feelings not usually associated with their kind. The story, told through the lead character, Roxy, is a fast-paced, paranormal/erotica adventure that emphasizes the paranormal while keeping the erotica below the "R" rating. The twists and turns, both in the basic plot and in the personal ups and downs Roxy must handle, come hard and heavy, including some of the "whoa... didn't see that coming" kind of surprises that I personally love. Though I am not normally a reader of first-person point of view novels, Awakening by Lorel Clayton was a pleasurable read, and, as it is the first in a series, I'll be looking out for book two.

In Awakening, a paranormal romance by Lorel Clayton, the reader gets to know the main character, Roxy, as an attractive yet timid redhead (think the librarian stereotype). When she saves a vampire at the Crossroads from savage werewolves, though, she comes to know her own power and rapidly becomes a confident, fierce, and fiery opponent that ignites fear in her enemies. Being a natural witch, she has a variety of supernatural powers, notably to read others' minds, including their true motives, their desires, and anything they think of. Unfortunately, vampires can manipulate her thoughts, which makes trusting them nearly impossible. Soon, she has to decide who she can trust and what stories to believe about a curse that could spell a possible armageddon.

Awakening immerses the reader in a fantasy wonderland of witches (good and bad), whimsical faeries, bloodthirsty vampires, and confident, animalistic werewolves. Natural desire is a key denominator between these different classes, and this becomes most evident in their search for sexual mates. The sex scenes are very well presented: characters have extremely heightened sensuality and become ecstatic and euphoric during the act. Apart from sexual lust, they hunger for blood and dominance as well, and this is a central theme of the book: desire, whether it be good or bad, and how one does not always have a say in one's own behavior. This is a great read by Lorel Clayton with multiple elements, including passionate love, danger, adventure, and interesting themes that can make readers see their own behavior from a different perspective.

Awakening is the first book in the Convergence series by Lorel Clayton. The story follows Roxy, an introverted witch and empath. She spent most of her life trying to avoid forming any deep connections, because she simply didn’t want to be lost in more emotions and thoughts than she already had. However, with the prophesied Convergence approaching, Roxy becomes an unwilling target. She has powers that people crave at any price. She doesn't know whom to trust and whom to believe. Can she believe the witch turning into a wraith or the werewolf with a complicated marriage? Can she truly believe the vampire she has fallen in love with, or was everyone playing with her? With danger closing in from every direction, can Roxy figure out the truth while also accepting herself for who she truly is?

Author Lorel Clayton created a world where the supernatural existed, and chaos surrounded everyone. Roxy was a joy to follow. She was vulnerable and unsure of the world around her. Her powers made her someone to be desired and someone to hunt, and she wasn’t happy with either of the choices. She was refreshingly naïve at times, and I loved to watch her figure things out at her own pace. The worldbuilding was fantastic and very well done. I enjoyed the tension, action, and drama around Roxy. More than that, the story was entertaining as it unfolded and revealed what was truly happening. I loved reading about Roxy’s awareness of her powers and how they gave her something to fight for. Awakening is a great start to the series, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.
