Author Biography

I have always loved thrillers, especially those written with a touch of humor, like some of my favorites by John Grisham. I love the juxtaposition of suspense and humor if you can get it right.

Bad Company is the story of finance grad Jonah Mark. Growing up, his only interest was reading mystery books. He finds a job with a company that sells high-tech weapons parts for the US government. Something doesn’t seem right from day one, and his penchant for snooping gets the attention of the partners of the firm. Suddenly someone at the firm he confided in about his suspicions is murdered and he finds himself being watched in the office and followed on the streets.

Jonah discovers on his first day on the job that his ex-girlfriend works for the firm, and his childhood best friend joins the firm soon after he does. Jonah’s constant need to chase every lead soon leads all three of them to find themselves in the crosshairs of whoever is behind all this. Together, they hatch a plan to catch the culprits, one that is both dangerous and hilarious at the same time. The book ends in a slow-motion car chase through the busy rush hour traffic of midtown Manhattan.

Bad Company is based on my own experience at the first firm I worked at back in the eighties. If you’ve never tried a cocktail of suspense mixed with humor, buckle your seats, sit back, and enjoy.

Bad Company by Lester Bleich tells the story of Jonah Mark, a mystery-obsessed young accountant who would rather be a spy. After being out of a job for quite a while, he gladly takes up the unexpected opportunity to be the assistant to the CFO at Tyler Technologies, a manufacturer of high-tech weapons. On Jonah’s very first day, he discovers Hannah, his ex-partner, working as an engineer for the same company. Giving the relationship a second chance soon becomes of secondary concern as they discover that the owners of Tyler Technologies are involved in a sinister plot to smuggle dangerous weapons to the enemies of the United States. The foes are aware of Jonah’s interest in their case, but despite putting his life at risk, the young accountant is determined to expose the traitors.

Don't allow the serious plot of Lester Bleich’s Bad Company to make you think that the whole tone of the book is equally serious. Humor is present throughout the piece, and readers are likely to find themselves laughing out loud more than once. Jonah, the protagonist, is a lovable character. It is wonderful how he grows while preserving a part of his true self rather than abandoning it for the sake of fitting in; by the end, it becomes clear that the person he really is gets him through this unusual adventure. The book is clean; with no graphic violence, and minimal use of expletives, making it suitable for younger readers as well.
