Be Brave, Little Puffy by Arline Cooper is the story of Puffy, a little puffer fish who lives in the sea. Puffy’s body is small and plump and his fins are short and weak. He is just like any other puffer fish in the sea. Puffy did not like his spikes and his friends keep complaining that he is pricking them. One day his friends give him an ultimatum that if he does not stop putting out his spikes they will stop playing with him. Puffy gets angry and swims away from them. Puffy goes to different places, hoping to make new friends. Finally the spikes that he does not like help to save his life and Puffy ends up liking his useful spikes.
The story is about self-acceptance, self-love, and being contented with what you have. The bright and colorful illustrations by the author make the concept clear and these give the fish their own personalities and identities, making them real and memorable to young readers. The verses give a lyrical feel and they add to the fluidity and pace of the story. It is a wonderful story for children to read at home and in classrooms because of the message it conveys. Many times children are unhappy with the gifts they possess and their uniqueness. This story will encourage them to embrace their flaws and strengths beautifully and help them realize everyone is beautiful in their own special way. In you have children at home or in classrooms who are unhappy with themselves, this story of Puffy is perfect to bring a smile to their faces.
