In Beautiful, Wonderful, Strong Little Me!, Hannah Carmona Dias gives readers an uplifting picture book about a young girl who’s comfortable in her own skin, even if others may not be. As she plays and has adventures, sometimes others get curious about her and ask her questions about herself. Rather than letting them get her down, she proudly celebrates who she is and lists her strengths, personality, and kindness. Her message is clear: she's so much more than what people see on the outside. Through the use of playful rhymes, the story reminds children that confidence grows from inside and that differences make life brighter. With colorful and detailed drawings, Dolly Georgieva-Gode’s artwork aligns perfectly with the words. This gentle story reminds everyone that there’s a place for them and that being yourself is enough.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Beautiful, Wonderful, Strong Little Me! by Hannah Carmona Dias. It completely personifies one of my favorite quotes by the incomparable Dolly Parton, “Find out who you are, and do it on purpose.” The message is so important and clear: Be true to yourself and be proud of it. I wish I had a book like this when I was a child. I didn’t accept myself until I was well into adulthood. As an educator, I’ve always tried to connect with children on a personal level by finding what we have in common. This is crucial because if they have something in common with me, then that means they’re not weird. Some kids don’t automatically know that. That’s why I love how this book could spark classroom discussions about who you are, what makes you special, and kindness. To extend it, students could create their own “I Am” pages, listing what they look like, what they’re good at, and what matters most to them. Those kinds of activities not only build self-esteem but also literacy, since kids are connecting language to their own lives. Along with its vibrant, engaging illustrations, this story is an excellent way to reassure children that their individuality is not only valid but worth celebrating.
