Chef Romi always thought of herself as the best chef in the whole wide world. What better way to prove her cooking skills and ability than to participate in a cooking competition? She feels the crown is already hers before the competition even starts. She had the help of her sous chef, Sam, whom she thinks is beneath her and just there to make her light shine brighter. The day of the competition arrives, and Chef Romi is in high spirits. Is there a shock waiting for Romi? What would it be, if any? More importantly, would Romi clinch the highly coveted crown? Find out all this and more in the wonderful children's book titled Best Chef in Town, written by Lori Rotter with beautiful illustrations by Vaughan Duck.

Best Chef in Town by Lori Rotter teaches invaluable morals to children, such as the power of collaboration and humility, and the dangers of pride and a boastful nature. Foremost is the value of people. Everybody should be treated with the same level of love and respect, and should not be looked down upon. Another lesson is the power of creativity and how to make the best out of any situation you find yourself in. I love the beautiful illustrations that make this book so appealing to young readers and perfectly depict the story. The author's simple narrative style is easy for children to comprehend. Lastly, children have the pleasure of learning a new recipe. I recommend Best Chef in Town to all young readers.

When you know you’re good at something, you want to tell the whole world and perhaps in the process win a few awards. In Lori Rotter’s Best Chef in Town, Chef Romi Rabbit hears of a great way to increase her exposure. It’s a cooking competition. She rallies her Sous Chef, Sam, and they head over to the competition, confident that Chef Romi Rabbit will win the crown. Only, she’s more interested in greeting her fans and forgets that the entire purpose of the competition is to create something spectacular and wow the judges. She tells Sam that she is the star and she will make all the decisions. Sam is worried that his boss is spending too much time greeting the crowds, so he goes ahead and creates something that wows the judges. Will Chef Romi Rabbit take the credit for his work and wear the crown?

Lori Rotter’s picture book, Best Chef in Town, is about 'teamwork and fair play.' The plot follows a popular local chef, Romi, as she enters a competition with the intent of winning and wearing the crown. Her confidence is almost sickening as she hogs the spotlight, oblivious to the simple matters like actually cooking up a spectacular dish. The language is straightforward, allowing young readers to follow along and improve their reading skills easily. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful, adding another dimension to the developing plot. The themes are evident: cooking is fun, competing is also fun, but one must work well with others and be fair in how they treat others. Teamwork is always important, as is humility, and allowing others to receive the credit when they go above and beyond their duties, like Sous Chef Sam did in this story. An engaging and educational read.
