Betrayer by J.A. Bullen is the second installment in The Unbound series. Along with Diana Kathryn Plopa, this epic fantasy brings us an entirely new take on Vikings. In a world at war with itself, Vali heads to Falkest after defeating the beast of Fangor. Having his right arm damaged during the battle, Vali has to find an alternative way of fighting and build his strength anew. Among his people, he searches for survivors of Ulfrost with his betrothed, Freyja, overjoyed that he still lives. In this story, alliances will be tested. With the threat of The Masked Ones looming overhead, it matters who stands by your side. Unfortunately, it also matters if one has a knife aimed at one's back.

This is a whole new take on the might of the Vikings. J.A. Bullen has a unique way of describing the characters. I clearly understood their body language and facial expressions; their personalities jumped off the pages. Taken by the hand and willingly diving into the ocean of words, I was transported to a fantastical world of beasts and Vikings with elemental abilities to use as added weaponry. Wonderfully using misdirection, I was left gasping with surprise several times by the author. I will gladly recommend this book to all fans of fantasy. Suited for young adults and the more mature as well, this series is a definite must-read. However, I suggest not reading this as a stand-alone book but as part of the series, as intended.
