Follow multiple friends from diverse ethnic backgrounds and learn how to create meaningful friendships in the colorful, bilingual children’s picture book, Between Friends: Entre Amigos by Juliana Anthony and Elena Gaona. Who is a friend and how do friends act toward each other? According to the text, a friend is kind and compassionate. They are there when you fall and when you are sad. Asking for help from a friend is also okay. A friend will step in and help you when you feel overwhelmed and they will be happy for you when you are successful. Other important characteristics of friendships are explored and the book also explains the importance of values such as love, respect, and authenticity in creating healthy, long-term friendships.
Through bright, multi-colored illustrations, Between Friends explains what friendship involves. I loved that the book’s messages are also helpful to adults but specifically crucial for children during their formative years. Its lessons will help them navigate and evaluate friendships as they establish relationships with others. I also loved the book’s appreciation for diversity and its depiction of friendships between children from different ethnicities. Its bilingual text will be useful for children who understand either or both of the languages used. The language used is also easy and can be understood by the intended audience. The book also contains many creative ideas of how to develop a friendship and activities that friends can take up together. With enlightening lessons and endearing illustrations, Between Friends by Juliana Anthony and Elena Gaona is a wonderful picture book that children will love.
