“What's the point in saving the world when you're not around for the people that matter? And what if you woke up one day and they were gone?” For Sergeant Keylon Williams, the protagonist of the novel Between Wives by E. Nigma, this question will test his sanity to the limit. As a New Orleans cop, Keylon takes part in a raid that goes wrong, resulting in the death of one of his men. Enraged by the event, Sergeant Williams storms the house where the bad guys are hiding, only to find himself standing in a tuxedo ten years later. His former life is gone, as is any trace of his wife Dawn and their three kids. Instead, Sergeant Williams discovers he is married to Tiara, a former fellow cop. Seeking answers to questions that have none, Keylon soon finds himself alternating between realities and timelines, where the main constant is his desire to go home. Unfortunately for Sergeant Williams, he is about to discover that sometimes you cannot choose your fate; you can only accept it.
Fresh and original, Between Wives by E. Nigma is a hypnotic psychological thriller and mystery in a single package. The plot centers on a man and his unwanted ability to shift between alternate realities and timelines as he seeks to stay rooted in one while slowly becoming enamored of the other. Themes of friendship, devotion, and love are expertly woven throughout the story, resulting in a very immersive tale. Character development is text-book perfection as the main cast has distinct personalities and all experience growth as people. A steady yet urgent pace binds it all together, resulting in that 'one more page' feel that had me up reading past midnight as I could not put it down till I got to the end. Overall, it is a stunningly unique, fascinating tale and a perfect reminder that the most precious commodity we have in life is time.
