Beyond the Spiral Gates by Mutch Katsonga is a YA coming-of-age story. Wickfield’s is an institution for children that society deems far too dangerous to live among them. This is one boy’s story of his time at Wickfield’s School for Criminal Children, a time that takes us from the present as an old man, an insomniac facing his demons, back to when it all began. This is a story of self-exploration, a love story, a story full of emotion as we are taken through the terrifying, traumatic events of adolescence. Abuse, organized religion, and years of being terrorized to the point of insanity, this story takes us on a journey that is all too real – a journey that starts inside and ends beyond the spiral gates.
Beyond the Spiral Gates by Mutch Kasonga is something completely different, a fresh and original story. It will terrify you and it will have you cringing in places There’s no doubt that institutions like this existed and, in places, still do. This is a rollercoaster ride, highly emotional, touching on subjects that are all very real and ongoing to this day. This is written in the first-person, starting from the present and spiraling back to the past to where it all started. You will find yourself on the side of the main protagonist, rooting for him all the way. Overall, this is a well-written, thrilling tale. A word of warning – if you do not like reading about abuse and violence, this isn’t for you. If you like a decent thriller with a great story, then pick this up because you won't put it down until it's finished.
