Bianca: The Brave Frail and Delicate Princess by Meg Welch Dendler is a fascinating adventure story with fantastical characters. Princess Bianca has not seen the outside world. She lives a royal life within the Kingdom of Pacifico and has not gone outside the castle. Princess Bianca is bored with her cushy royal existence and she begins to feel lonely. She wishes her kingdom was exciting and full of magic, with fairies, witches, and dragons like in the books she reads. She expects her life to continue the same way, day after day, and year after year. An unwelcome and unexpected visitor to the kingdom changes everything and Bianca hears rumors and stories about how a dragon has conquered the kingdom. The king and his knights fail to return from their search for the creature. The frail and delicate Princess Bianca, though young and sheltered, understands the danger and she realizes that it is her duty to protect the kingdom.

The story is an enchanting fairy tale woven with witches, fairies, dragons, adventure, and whimsy. Bianca’s character has been strongly portrayed and her bravery, courage, kindness, and goodness are tangible to young readers as they turn the pages. It is a wonderful read and, with all the action and adventure, has a good pace and movement which will keep readers glued till the very end. It is also interesting to note Bianca’s transition from that of a quiet and protected girl to that of being a responsible and confident young girl. For all those who love magic, adventure, action, fantasy, whimsy, and fairy tales, this book is a must-read!
