I’m sure you love homemade cookies. Billy certainly does. In Pria Dee’s Billy Makes Cookies, Billy takes the initiative to bake some cookies all by himself. After all, it can’t be that difficult. He watched his mother make cookies often enough. His mother’s gone shopping, his sister’s asleep and the babysitter’s wearing her headphones and ignoring him. So, why not? He remembers all the ingredients: butter, sugar, eggs and flour. He just dumps it all into a bowl, but when he reaches for the flour container, it crashes to the floor. What a mess. He decides to clean himself up first by having a bubble bath, but he pours in too much bubble liquid and allows the water to run too long. Another mess. Then his mother comes home.

Pria Dee’s picture book, Billy Makes Cookies, is another hilarious book in the Billy and Molly series. The plot follows Billy as he pursues the initiative of baking cookies. He has the right idea in terms of ingredients, only his sense of quantities is a bit off and he’s quite intent on making a mess. It’s not his fault, though, as the babysitter should have been paying closer attention. However, the shenanigans between the baking attempt and the bubble bath will certainly have young readers laughing along as they imagine the mess Billy made. The language is simple for young readers to follow along. The illustrations by Tina Perko are superb and add another dimension to the story. Young readers will learn that it’s good to take the initiative to do things by themselves, but it's a good idea to have an adult supervise, especially in the kitchen where so many things could go wrong. A fun read.
