Patience was a little girl who always moved too fast. At the beginning of this delightful children’s book, she had a leg cast due to a bicycle accident. Before her ninth birthday, she was impatient, wanting to see what her mother was planning for her special day. Her mother told Patience to “Take it slow. Be a kid. Play and be free.” Many wonderful surprises happened during her birthday celebration. Author Michael A. Brown has crafted a captivating children’s book titled Birthday? Birthday!! Birthday!!! Impatient Patience’s Special Day. This book is packed with thought-provoking conversation-starters for parents to pursue.
The most important lesson in this book may be the message to children to play and enjoy life. Children often worry, especially during times of the pandemic, parental unemployment, family financial difficulties, etc. They, like adults, become impatient and want to know what is going to happen, even at fun times like a birthday. Another seemingly insignificant incident was that of Mom’s reply to what was in the box. It was the quickest, but not best, response, and she then asked: “Ever had that happen to you?” This is another opportunity for parental and child discussion. Another important part of this book is the revealing, and beautiful illustrations by Lovyaa Garg, as these present a multicultural family (with no comments made) in a much-needed, new perspective. Birthday? Birthday!! Birthday!!! Impatient Patience’s Special Day by Michael A. Brown is a gem! Every child will want it to be read over and over again.
