John Avery has a hit on his hands with “Black Cobra” for sure! Aaron Quinn is fifteen, mature beyond his years, an orphan living quietly on his own in a tropical paradise until fate introduces him to a couple that will end up putting his life on the line. In a plot that will take him in luxury from the blue waters of the Cayman Islands to an archaic Russian submarine in the waters around San Diego, Aaron unknowingly is put in the middle of a plot to assassinate the President of the United States and anyone else who gets in the way. People from his past are popping up all around him in a kaleidoscope of coincidences. If they survive, what role will they play in his future?

Aaron Quinn is like a teenaged MacGyver, creative and quick thinking! Or maybe this is how James Bond started out, cool, reasonably calm under pressure, able to get out of impossible situations, drawing the women like a magnet! Or maybe he is just himself, and John Avery should be congratulated for raising such a fine young man who is larger than life in his own quiet way, willing to share the limelight with other characters and allowing them to be developed and honed into realistic people able to evoke my feelings, good or bad. Like the spokes of a wheel, every twist and turn met together perfectly in an ending that made me say “No way” and “I love it” at the same time!

Aaron Quinn is now about 15 years old. However he is not a typical 15-year-old. Unfortunately for Aaron, he has had to grow up quickly, all too quickly where he has seen all too much tragedy and death. Now he is living out his young life as a dive instructor on a small island. Things are good until he meets someone who seems to be familiar. He just can’t seem to place him. Aaron signs as help crew on a luxury motor yacht on a month long voyage from Grand Cayman to San Diego. But, things are not as they seem to be. The man at the helm is a cold-blooded killer on his way to join a gang of conspirators in an international assassination attempt. After arrival, the innocent welcome party aboard an aging San Diego Maritime Museum submarine turns deadly as the submarine is highjacked by the gang of conspirators to use as a weapon in their planned assassination. But, the leader of the rogues has an even more diabolical plan. It befalls the unlikely hero, Aaron, to foil this plan, if he can . . .

"Black Cobra" is a well-thought-out and put-together action adventure story. The author has quickly defined his main characters as either good or bad. The good are somewhat good while the bad are very, very bad. The plotting is well done and moves along quickly keeping the reader wanting to know what happens next. The only flaw in the plot is that there are a lot of convenient coincidences. The final chapters are exciting and the end is a satisfying one. I just wonder where we might see Aaron Quinn and family again. Nicely Done.

"Black Cobra" is the heart stopping sequel to John Avery's adapted screenplay, "Three Days to Die". Aaron Quinn and his three companions who are in the speeding Aston Martin car are in a state of collective shock because they have just murdered somebody. Shortly thereafter, detective Harness is shaken from his sleep by a report that gunfire has been heard at Sally's Diner. This is how the story opens and the adrenaline rushing narrative winds up when all the major characters are drawn to an assassination plot of a top government official. The plot thickens as the mastermind is traced to a retired Russian submarine commander. Will Aaron come out of this adventure thriller alive?

Book one in the series, "Three Days to Die" was adapted from Avery's screenplay by the same name, which was shortlisted at the 2010 PACE International Screenwriting Awards. It is no wonder that its sequel, "Black Cobra", is also a masterpiece. There are many characters in this story and they go through a tapestry of scenes filled with suspense, action and adventure. Fast-paced and agonizingly thrilling, "Black Cobra" is also a romantic story. Aaron's efforts to help the crew of a luxury motor yacht, who are on a month long voyage from Grand Cayman to San Diego, has resulted in the discovery of a conspiracy that will affect the whole world. This will push him against the wall where if he decides to give up, his loved ones will die. The other alternative is to attempt an impossible rescue effort. The story's strengths can be found in its plot, its character development and how the story is being told. And these are the elements that make "Black Cobra" a compelling read.

"Black Cobra" is book two in the 'Aaron Quinn Thriller Series', but there is enough background given for it to stand on its own. It is the story of Aaron Quinn, a teen whose family is torn apart by an accident caused by a sociopathic rogue called Jason Beckham. After the accident happens, we next meet him several years later in the Cayman Islands where he works at a dive shop. By a strange coincidence, Beckham and his girlfriend are also in the Caymans and meet up with him there. Beckham, a dishonorably discharged vet, has been contacted by his former superior and offered the opportunity to change his dismissal status in exchange for doing a job for him in San Diego. Beckham invites Aaron to accompany them on the trip.

This is an exciting and suspenseful thriller. Aaron is an intriguing character who soon discovers that the job Beckham is undertaking could have catastrophic consequences. 'The Cobra' is a diesel-powered Soviet submarine now on display in San Diego, and Aaron is given a detailed tour of the sub. He learns how this type of sub was designed and what life was like for Russian submariners. I found this tour as fascinating as Aaron did. He is invited to a party aboard the sub on the night that the mission is scheduled to take place. Only a few of the people involved know exactly what the plan is -- and how disastrous the result could be. Avery skillfully directs the action throughout "Black Cobra", keeping the reader wondering just what will happen next and how Aaron will get out of it alive. It is fun, exciting and well worth reading.

"Black Cobra" by John Avery brings us back into the high octane world of Aaron Quinn. Once again in the heart of the Caribbean sea there is danger and the books gives twists and turns the reader does not see coming. Aaron thought it would be a fun trip to help out a luxury motor yacht on a trip from Grand Cayman to San Diego. What he did not know about this trip was that the man who was at the helm of the boat was a cold blooded killer who wanted to join a gang of international conspirators in an assassination attempt. When they have a welcome party on an old San Diego Maritime Museum submarine things take a turn for the more deadly. The gang of conspirators come on board and take everyone hostage locking down the sub with deadly intent. If Aaron thought that was his biggest problem he would be mistaken because when the submarine hits depth the hull suddenly fails. Then he realizes that he must choose to give himself up and let all his friends and loved ones die or confront the conspirators and make a rescue.

John Avery has truly made a pulse pounding thriller with this book. Every time I thought I had a moment to catch my breath another twist or turn was revealed. This book has more turns in it then a Nascar race but it is one of the things that make it so good. It is well-written with a very well-developed character in Aaron Quinn. The man is faced with impossible choices and impossible tasks but he manages to make the best of it every time. I would recommend this book for any fan of thrillers.
