“His father had given the talisman to him with a promise: It will guide you and give you strength when you need it most.” Black Lightning by KS Jones is about a young boy named Samuel who has gone through a lot in life, but continues to fight for the life he wants. As an adult, I don’t often read about younger protagonists, so getting to know ten-year-old Samuel was refreshing. Kids are so honest, and most are not easily discouraged. I have younger siblings who have also been through a lot, like Samuel. I was able to understand his character on a more personal level because of that. The supporting characters were what Samuel needed. He needed reliable people by his side, but he also needed to be challenged so he could grow. I admire Jones’ skill in character development.

Jones’ writing style is well balanced. Black Lightning was a quick read for me because of how well it was written. Jones’ opening scene for this story was very well done. I knew right away how I was supposed to feel about certain characters. The scenes flowed together nicely, and that kept me hooked. Jones gave the right amount of attention to every aspect of the story. Character development, setting, dialogue between the characters, action scenes, and a unique charm set this story apart. I admire the author's creativity. This story was so much fun and refreshing to read. This is perfect for younger audiences who love adventure!

Heroes are not born, they are forged in flashes of lightning, as young Samuel is in BLACK LIGHTNING. This is the kind of book we wish had been around when we were children. It's a wonderful magical adventure with a powerful leading character. A beautifully story of courage and endurance.

BLACK LIGHTNING is a fantastical landscape - a door separating two worlds - with enough mystery and imagery to keep me turning the pages. It captivated me like a few Bruce Coville books did when I was a kid. This is a truly great read. 5-stars without question.

Brilliant story that splices the metaphysical with the literal. The author's ability to creatively blend imagery through dialogue and scene-building makes this a great read. The themes and issues keep the story moving while allowing the reader to empathize and experience the story in very real terms. Excellent book, would highly-recommend for young adults, adults, and fans of contemporary dramatic fiction.

Wow, what a fantastic read. I think it's easy for any of us, regardless of age, to identify with familial struggles and that feeling that we are lacking something. The character development made it easy to sink into this book and really feel intertwined with the action. For it all to break into another world helped me remember how easy it is to form a connection with the fantastic and how much I miss it!
