Two Worlds: One Family by Felicia L. Kenny is a heartwarming children’s picture book centered on eight-year-old Jory, who loves her family dearly. Spending time with her big mixed family always brings her joy and comfort. Jory’s family is unique: her dad is White, and her mom is Black, which makes Jory biracial. Jory can also find families like hers around: Shareef’s mom is Indian, and his dad is German; Kayla’s mom is Japanese, and her dad is Mexican. Through these everyday observations, Jory learns that people come in different colors—white, brown, and black—and that these differences are something to be appreciated rather than feared. She understands that there is beauty in diversity and that all people matter, irrespective of race and culture.

This clean and family-friendly story is thoughtfully written for young readers. Two Worlds: One Family is for parents and guardians looking for a gentle, age-appropriate way to introduce conversations about race and diversity. Felicia L. Kenny helps children see that love, respect, and kindness are important in every family and relationship. The illustrations are beautiful and will engage children’s attention, especially paired with the inclusion of coloring pages at the end of the book. Early readers will find this book easy to read because of the clear font, short sentences, and easily understood words. Two Worlds, One Family is more than being about interracial families; it is also about how people with different backgrounds, appearances, and experiences come together to become loving families and strong communities.
