Blood on the Range: The Breaking of a Badman by Chris Smith is a historical novel that will appeal to everyone. Nate Todd and his men herded their cattle to Bakersfield for sale. Along the way, they encountered brutal cattle rustlers, whom they killed. Unfortunately, the murdered rustling gang leader was Dalton’s brother, the leader of Blood Canyon Gang. This gang was notorious, feared even by law enforcement. Dalton was out to avenge his brother, so he framed Nate for another murder and put a bounty on his head. A man may run for his life when he’s threatened, but when his family is in danger, he will go toe to toe with the devil. The Blood Canyon Gang will find out how good Nate is at playing their game.
The Breaking of a Badman by Chris Smith is an installment in the Blood on the Range series. It was gripping, action-packed, and intense. The story was equal action and equal slick humor. Bravery, honor, loyalty, and sacrifice were some themes that the book centered on. Chris developed the characters well, and Bridget was a favorite of mine. She was resilient, intelligent, and a charmer. Murdock was another refreshing character who made me laugh when he was fighting with Barley. His loud thoughts were hilarious. The switch with Gettys and Squire wasn’t expected. Their unpredictability added dimension and depth to the story. I enjoyed the smooth dialogue and straightforward writing style, which helped me follow the era-appropriate language with ease. Chris Smith has written a thrilling book, and I applaud it!
