Blood Runs Deep by Bill Halamandaris is a political thriller that follows Theo James Alexander, a seasoned Senate investigator, who is called to Naples, Florida, after the mysterious death of his uncle. He is pulled into a web of corruption involving high-profile politicians and powerful people. As he uncovers his family’s hidden history, faces danger, and digs into the underbelly of political and criminal worlds, Theo’s quest transforms from a search for answers into a fight for justice. Those who are involved in the fraudulent Medicare schemes, and the shadowy security firm SafeCo that keeps their activities hidden, will do anything to maintain the status quo. Theo's quest becomes increasingly dangerous as he gets closer to the truth. Theo must rely on his investigative skills and support from his boss, Senator Colgate, to survive. Can he expose the truth before it’s too late?
Bill Halamandaris has written a thriller that I utterly loved for several reasons. First, the themes are resonant, and contemporary readers will quickly identify with the characters. This story is based on real life, and it invites readers to think about corruption, especially in Medicare and other health programs. Second, the first-person narrative voice pulled me into Theo’s worldview, allowing me to see events, situations, and other characters from his unique, somewhat quirky perspective. Third, the characters remain steadfast despite the high stakes. Theo is a relentless investigator with a strong sense of justice and someone undeterred from his mission, and his determination drives him to make risky moves. Meyer, his enigmatic confidant with deep ties to Theo’s family history, and Sam, a close friend whose relationship with Theo is fleshed out, are intriguing characters. Blood Runs Deep is a captivating tale of fraud, with memorable characters and excellent prose. I highly recommend it!
