Bobby Brumley and the Power of Beowulf: Birth of a Hero is the first in a series of young adult urban fantasy novels by Frank Wood. Bobby Brumley is eager to start the wrestling season on a high by becoming the co-captain of the local high school team. After moving into his father's home in the small town of Darbysville, after his mother and younger brother died in a motor accident, Bobby has his hands full with his combative stepbrother, Phillip. Soon enough, he is going to be thrust into events with roots back in biblical times. After meeting his long-lost uncle under extraordinary circumstances, Bobby learns that he is the designated Keeper entrusted to wield the power of Beowulf and meant to stop the descendants of Grendel from recovering the last piece of the Gathering Lantern. With the arrival of the Dengrels in town, can Bobby and his friends prevent evil from gaining its foothold?

If you're a fan of comic book-style young adult fantasy stories, Bobby Brumley and the Power of Beowulf is just the book for you. Frank Wood weaves an engaging yarn inspired by Anglo-Saxon mythology and biblical lore that hooks you in from the first page and refuses to let go until the end. The cast of characters is quite large, but Wood manages to give everyone a distinct personality and voice to make them stand out. The book ends on a cliffhanger with open-ended plot threads, which hopefully will be addressed in the sequel. Recommend to teenagers and young adult readers who love all things fantasy.
