Making friends can be challenging. Boo is Making Friends by Renata Vie will entertain and delight kids as they learn about this valuable skill. Boo has a unique way of greeting people. He surprises them and shouts "Boo!" Inevitably, his potential friends get scared and run away. With the help of a wise old owl named Koo, Boo learns some new techniques for introducing himself. He immediately tries to make a friend using Koo's suggestion but is unsuccessful. Koo shares some more ideas, and as Boo tries things out, he becomes more adept at making friends without diminishing his vibrant and buoyant personality.
I have worked with preschoolers for many years, and Renata Vie's book Boo is Making Friends mirrors some of the challenges young children face as they learn to navigate social situations. This is especially true when one child is outgoing and energetic while the other is quiet. I love her emphasis on the reality that everyone is different and not to expect all kids to act the same way. Empathy and self-love fill this book. Boo is free to be himself while still becoming more aware of how others react to his exuberance. Learning to accept people's different personalities and not demanding that they change is an invaluable skill. The illustrations by Renata Vie and D.V. are outstanding. Boo's big personality shines through with his large blue eyes and cheerful face. The pictures are full of fun and action. Boo is Making Friends should be in every preschool and kindergarten classroom.
