In "The Adventures of Bosley Bear: A Dual Language Book in Spanish and English", Bosley is an ambitious, lovable and curious bear who wants to learn more about the world outside of the tiny cave where he lives with his mother. Bosley is not your average bear: he is bilingual, and speaks both Spanish and English in this book. In fact, this talented bear is multilingual, as translations are also available in Chinese, Spanish, Italian, German, Arabic, French, and Russian, all matched with the English text on the page. A special multilingual volume is also available, with the text presented simultaneously in all the above languages. According to the information posted at amazon.com, author Tim Johnson "discovered the power of bilingual books while visiting Japan as a teenager." In "Bosley Sees the World", the story is presented simultaneously in both English and Spanish. For the reader, key vocabulary words are highlighted in each sentence of the text. They correspond to corresponding highlighted words in the printed text of the second language, to function as a dictionary. Bosley decides he will explore the world outside his cave, and takes us along on his journey. He finds mountains, forests, and the river. At the end of the day, however, he realizes what a small portion of the world he has explored.

Tim Johnson’s text in this bedtime story is clear and simple. “How is it that the world can be so big? I have so much to explore!” Bosley says. At the end of the day, Bosley climbs into his own bed: “It was the perfect size for Bosley. He curled up in his little bed and dreamed about the big world. He would explore it all someday. He knew it.” The color illustrations by Ozzy Esha are charming and will be very appealing to children. Translations are provided by Orlando Soto. I highly recommend this book to parents and their young children. The bilingual text of "Bosley Sees the World" makes this a very unique and useful book for parents who are eager to expose their children to a second language, whether it is English or Spanish. The message that the world is well worth exploring is also delightfully presented in this special book. I think we can look forward to many more adventures with Bosley Bear.

“Bosley Sees the World: The Adventures of Bosley Bear” by Tim Johnson is a bilingual Spanish/English story useful for introducing young children to foreign languages, both to begin learning a new language and for exposure to another culture. The basic storyline is about a young bear named Bosley who becomes disenchanted with the small size of his cave home. He declares to his mother that he is going outside to explore the nearby forest. From there he climbs a tree, from which he sees a river and a mountain. He next decides to climb the mountain, from which he sees so much more of the world than he ever realized existed, even seeing his tiny cave opening from atop the mountain. He returns home, vowing to explore further some day, but for now he has decided his cave is just the right size.

This book is more than just a story. It includes a cross-reference glossary of new English and Spanish words and their meanings; a brief history of how Tim Johnson got the idea for this book during a visit to Japan in his teen years; and the website where you can see and purchase many dozens of additional books in at least 11 languages, including sign language. Johnson wanted a way to introduce new cultures to the next generation, and to introduce them to new languages. The Bosley Bear story is now available in at least 8 languages. Mr. Johnson’s efforts are making inroads into bridging the gap between many different cultures around the world, as he continues to work on writing new books for translation and subsequent distribution. I cannot be more resolute about recommending this book and I urge you to check out his website if you who would like to give your children the decided benefit of having been exposed to a variety of cultures at a young age. As our world continues to shrink through the advent of new technology and a more global economy, the significance of being conversant in multiple languages cannot be overstated. Youth who are exposed at a very young age will hold a valuable advantage over their peers as they continue to develop their educational skills throughout their lives. Don’t let your children fall behind; get them started on their mufti-cultural education today.
