In Manage My Emotions for Teens, Dr. Kenneth Martz draws on more than 25 years of experience as a licensed psychologist working in the treatment and management of mental health. Teen years are possibly some of the toughest. Young adults deal with much more psychological stress than 20 years ago. In today’s world of social distancing and isolation, Dr. Ken asks some simple yet key questions to learn more about life through the language of emotions. Identifying our emotions, and learning how to resolve and manage our responses is vital for a happy life. He likens being ‘stuck’ on an unresolved issue to having a thorn stuck in your foot. It continues to cause pain and may become infected, affecting your whole body.
Dr. Ken’s questions create awareness with activities to help the reader explore tactics to restore emotional balance. Awareness itself is healing as we understand more about our emotions and how they impact common situations. Courage and fear, drive and anger, joy and boredom are some of the specific emotions he highlights. Understanding the role emotions play in the context of motivation, communication and relationships can enhance the quality of our lives.
I enjoyed reading Manage My Emotions for Teens and found an application for my own life. Compassionately and expertly written, Dr. Ken Martz reviews emotions and their processes. He provides many tools with real-life applications and activities to improve our skills. This is a valuable handbook for both teens and their parents. The family would benefit by learning how to navigate through emotional storms to calmer waters. Reflecting on my own childhood, these skills would have been priceless in resolving our family's conflicts through our teen years.
