After the war to end all wars, there seems to be something brewing in Berlin. Why would a political party need a security force? The question lingers with Will Cotton, a once popular writer, who is barely getting by on fillers for women’s magazines. It is 1924 in Paris, and Cotton witnesses firsthand the horrible cruelty of the SA, Brownshirts of the Nazi party in the streets of Berlin. Full of guilt for having done nothing to stop the thugs, he returns to Paris and is approached by a mysterious benefactor who offers to get his work published and give him a steady salary. His job? To collect information through silent observation of what is going on in Germany and what exactly the National Social German Worker’s Party is up to. Down to his last few francs, Cotton has a critical decision to make as he sips wine and shucks oysters in a café on the Boulevard Saint-Michel.

Crammed with mysterious intrigue, Boulevard Saint-Michel by Adam Purple is a classic waiting to happen. The character of Will Cotton is developed enough to leave the reader wanting more as is the rest of the plot. The darkness of looming espionage and the motivation to assuage his guilt casts a pallid spell over the book and subsequently the reader. The plot continues to hold one’s attention. Mysterious, intriguing, and full of promise; Adam Purple’s Will Cotton is sure to be among the great spy heroes of espionage novels. A cliffhanger that leaves me craving more!
