Boy with a Fife: Ebenezer Fletcher’s War of Independence by Elizabeth Raum is an engaging story that explores the American Revolution through the eyes of young Ebenezer Fletcher. The story begins in the tranquil town of New Ipswich, New Hampshire. Ebenezer, a boy passionate about liberty, is drawn into the burgeoning conflict between the American colonies and the British Empire. Ebenezer’s evolution from a boy engaged in mock drills with friends to a young man confronting the harsh realities of war reflects the transition faced by many young Americans during this tumultuous era. Although fiction, the story includes many real people, places, and events. It is a compelling introduction to the American Revolution for middle-grade readers, providing historical education and inspiring personal growth.

The author’s skill in personalizing the historical narrative is impressive. Through its well-developed characters, the struggle for independence is relatable. The short chapters allow the story to unfold grippingly, keeping the reader engaged while providing concise yet impactful glimpses into the characters and their world. Elizabeth Raum’s writing is educational, making complex historical events understandable and compelling. The detailed scenes of militia drills, Ebenezer’s fife playing, and the interactions among townsfolk provide a rich tapestry of colonial life. The narrative successfully balances action with introspection, allowing readers to understand both the external events and the internal conflicts faced by those fighting for their beliefs. Boy with a Fife celebrates courage, community, and the pursuit of freedom. At the end of the book, Raum provides information about the real Ebenezer and the works cited used to write the story. It's an excellent book to be used in middle-grade classrooms. I enjoyed it tremendously.
