Bucket Lists and Walking Sticks by Emma Scattergood is the first of a series of travelogues that document the author and her husband Darryl’s adventures in travelling around the world by a variety of means. An inveterate blogger from Australia, the author has compiled a compendium of their journey to Asia, through the Middle East, and finally around Europe by cruise ships, trains, buses, and local transport. Darryl had suffered a major accident several years previously and was still suffering from chronic pain, was required to take medication daily, and had suffered from depression. What the pair hope to prove in their journey is that travel not only broadens the mind and introduces you to exciting new cultures and people, but it is also physically beneficial.
Bucket Lists and Walking Sticks is not the first travel book I have read by Emma Scattergood, and her and her husband’s style of travel, age, and destinations resonate deeply with me. I can readily identify with the couple’s need for an element of luxury and ease during their long seven months away from Australia. Like them, our backpacking days are long behind us, and it is now time to take a little more care of the body than before when travelling. I loved that even when the destinations were difficult to access, such as the Acropolis in Greece, they both still found a way to enjoy the wonderful cities. For Emma, it meant hiking up to the actual building itself in Greece’s stifling heat, and for Darryl, it entailed a bus tour of Athens that would highlight views of the Acropolis. The length of their cruise across the Pacific, into the Mediterranean, and through the Suez Canal was incredible, and I was impressed that they didn’t become bored or overly moody. The story highlights many “bucket list” items that I know many readers will also have in their sights, and this will make the journey so much more enjoyable as you travel along with Emma and Darryl. Even after their return to Australia, Emma was already planning the diverse list of new places they must visit next time, so more power to them. If you are a traveller, or even if you are not, this book allows you to ride along with Emma and Darryl and enjoy some of the world’s most iconic sights and destinations. I loved this read and highly recommend it.
