Bushy Tail (The Curious Squirrel) is a children’s picture book written by Florence P. Bullis with illustrations by Luz M. Rodriguez. It tells the story of an inquisitive gray squirrel that has a unique encounter with a family of campers in the woods. In the early hours of the morning, the squirrel spots a family and decides to have a look at them. He studies how they behave, becomes fascinated by them, and is intrigued enough to relate their strange behavior to his buddy Chatter. The squirrel eats some snacks left carelessly by the campers and quenches his thirst with water. The funny thing is, the family has been watching him, too—just quietly enjoying his antics. And when the family leaves due to a hurricane warning, they have the memory of the observant squirrel.

Bushy Tail tells a sweet, lighthearted story pulled straight from the author’s own camping trip back in 1966. Instead of just describing what happened, Florence P. Bullis lets a curious squirrel do the talking. The squirrel’s perspective leads to plenty of laughs—he’s always getting mixed up about the humans and trying to figure out how to survive whatever nature throws his way. Those funny little moments are what make the book so enjoyable. This is a great reminder of the importance of observing nature and not disturbing it. It also shows how humans and wildlife adapt to nature’s destructive power—in this case, a hurricane. The colorful drawings show the beauty of the forest and make the reader feel as though they are in the woods. If you love gentle stories about the outdoors or just want to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life, you will like this book. It is a trip down memory lane and just plain fun.
