Frankie Fiore just wants to go back to a quiet life after doing time. He's leaving the mob life in New York City behind for a quiet life in Dunnville, North Carolina with his girlfriend and her daughter by a previous marriage. An early morning call from his former prison draws him back to New York to pay his respects to an old friend. The problem is that the friend has a last request: find his son, and keep the boy out of the life that nearly ruined them. Frankie is torn between starting a new life, and fulfilling an old friend's dying request. But when it comes to light that the request comes with a large payout, things change. It becomes more complicated when the friend dies with a mysterious neck wound, just after the mob boss is released from prison on a technicality. Soon, Frankie sees that his choices are simple: he'll wind up rich, or he'll wind up dead. By Hook or By Crook by Al Marsiglia is a thriller that takes you on an exciting ride through mob life with a final destination of happily-ever-after.
I enjoyed By Hook or By Crook. It's an interesting and exciting thriller that takes most of us into a life we can only imagine. It also balances family, relationships, and friendship in a beautiful mix that shows how relationships actually help Frankie navigate his difficult situations and choices. The loyalty and devotion of the characters make this book not just thrilling, but heartwarming as well. In fact, they give it a wholesome feel, despite the mob violence and some coarse language here and there. It was interesting to see how worlds can collide, and manage to merge into something better, interesting, and entertaining. It even has some humor in the mix to keep things going! Al Marsiglia does an excellent job of weaving thriller, romance, and some mystery into a tale that's intriguing and even fun. An excellent read!
