"By Starlight" by Dorothy Garlock takes place during the depression era in the Big Sky country of Montana. Maddy Aldridge has one thing on her mind, to keep the family store from going under. With her father bed ridden and a younger sister to take care of, she is finding life to be difficult. Seven years earlier Jack, the man she expected to marry, had left town, which was the last she heard of him. Maybe if he had stayed things would have been different. She has one opportunity to keep things going... to run an unlicensed speakeasy from the basement with a partner who is quite a mobster. When Jack returns she wonders if they can pick up where they left off. As a prohibition agent his job is to arrest the bootleggers. What will the truth be revealed? Can Jack and Maddy settle the differences and have a life together?

I have always liked Dorothy Garlock’s books. I found "By Starlight" to be an enjoyable read. I like the characters, the interaction between them, the depression era and second chances. There are some repetitions that are a little distracting but not real bad. I have found by reading her books she has a way of keeping the readers’ attention and making them feel as though they are part of the story. This book has it all: a depression-era theme, romance and suspense.
